This 30-piece modular is designed by Valentina Minayeva. I found the diagrams for this model in OrigamiUSA’s Spring 2021 publication of The Paper. I had a lot of trial and error while folding this model, because it was a step up from the level of complexity of my usual modulars, but I had lots of fun in the process!
The materials I used to make this model were strips of paper cut to a 1:3 ratio, and my trusty origami clips. My color scheme ended up being pale yellow and white, and I really like how it turned out!
This is what one of the units looks like. Originally, I accidentally skipped a step in making the units, so I wasn’t able to figure out how to put them together properly. Once I figured it out, though, I was able to put it together normally. One thing I didn’t notice while building the model was that the locking mechanism wasn’t that secure.
Regardless, I kept building the model and arrived at the finished piece! Moment of truth! I started to take the clips off...
Soon enough, though, I realized that because the locks weren’t secure enough, the model was going to fall apart! And fall apart it did. I needed to think of a new way to keep the model together.
After thinking for a bit, I realized that glue was probably my only solution. I know, you’re not supposed to use glue in origami! With some modulars, though, it’s the only solution to keep it together long term. I glued the pieces together, and this time they stuck!
This is what the final model looks like!
