On my origami journey, I just keep discovering more and more types of origami! This mini pineapple is a completely new type of origami that I have never done before. It is considered modular origami, and I have done several of those projects, but I consider this it’s own sub-category of modular origami. In this type of origami, for all the projects, there was only one type of piece that you make. Then, you can connect these pieces like Lego blocks to create many different models. The most popular origami model that’s made like this is the swan, but there are so many other models you can make using this method.
The model I chose to make was the mini pineapple. There was also a bigger pineapple, but I chose this one as my first project to start off with. For this project, each piece of paper is about 2″ by 4″, and the resulting piece is much smaller. The resulting mini pineapple was about 2″ by 2″. I used 7 pieces of construction paper that I had cut into smaller pieces to use for the pineapple. The pineapple was very thick, because of all the layers of paper.
Part of this project was very repetitive. You had to make so many of the same piece. When I was going to start this project, I thought that this was going to be very annoying, but I just ended up doing it whenever I wanted a break from doing something else. It was kind of relaxing, sitting there and making the pieces. Sure, it did get boring at times, but trust me, it pays off in the end.
I did end up gluing the pieces together, just because I didn’t want it to accidentally come apart, but you can totally skip this step and put them together normally. You do have to glue the leaves, but other than that, you’re fine.
This ended up being a really fun and relaxing project for me to do. I just went over and did it whenever I was bored. I finished this project in 3 days, and worked around 2-3 hours each day. I think anyone can make these projects as a really nice decoration or gift. I really loved the outcome. These are some pictures of the pineapple while it was being made and at the end. Mine ended up having a really big space in the middle, so I use it to hold pencils. See, it could even be used as a container!
